Description

Too super for superlatives so we’ll get right to the heart of the matter, offered is a Knute Rockne antique photograph/postcard lot of (46) featuring Knute, family and friends. Uncovered recently in a storage sale this true find was the personal property of Rockne’s sister Louise. Present are: (22) photos with (3) 1910s football scenes including (2) with Rockne; (7) 1910s-1920s recreational photos all of Rockne with family/friends; c.1920s Notre Dame baseball player; (5) c.1860s-1870s tintypes of Norwegian forbears; (5) child photos including (3) c.1890s cabinets and (2) c.1910s elongated 3 x 8-1/2“ photos believed to be Rockne‘s sons William and Knute, Jr; 1960s woman at Rockne’s memorial; and album of (24) 1900s-1920s photo-postcards including one of Rockne wearing a Notre Dame sweater. With virtually no exemplars available for comparison, this collection can only be described as unique in regards to being offered for sale. Photos range from average to better with the majority above average and better, postcards are partially adhered to the album and are generally very attractive. More on our website.

Conceding to the notion that somewhere someone must have other Rockne family photos, exhaustive research failed to encounter any similar to this group for sale or in print, suggesting they are quite rare. The postcards are only partially adhered to the album and major portions of most reverses are viewable. Several are filled out, with some appearing to have been written in Norwegian language. One is addressed to “Mr. K. Rockne, 1408 N. Rockwell St. Chicago, Ill.”. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to get a candid look at Knute Rockne’s personal life.

This is one of three lots in our current auction that came from a cache of photos and correspondence which were the personal property of Knute Rockne’s sister Louise Rockne of Chicago, IL. Housed in an antique trunk these original Rockne family mementos were recently discovered in a storage find. Offered items date from the 1860s Norway to the 1960s Midwestern and Northeastern United States. All indications and research lead H&S to believe that this exciting trove of Rockne related materials is unknown to the hobby and this is the first time they are being offered as Knute Rockne and family memorabilia. Interested parties may view the other two lots in our Football-Autographs and Americana-Other categories.
