It was a Maine high-school teacher and coach named Rupert "Rube" G. Johnson (1902-1974) who turned his bat-making passion into a thriving business. And the R.G. Johnson bat company is still in operation to this day, with its website (linked here) recounting that "Coach Johnson was known as the 'Grand Old Man' of sports in Maine and is regarded as the father of schoolboy baseball in Maine. He also was a scout for the Milwaukee Braves and other professional teams. Johnson was voted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and a custom Johnson bat is at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York." This early bat example measures 36" long and displays a rich hue and dark "MADE BY R.G. JOHNSON" brand with a surface sliver missing on the word "BY." There are a few errant markings here and there as well as a past owner's ink name notation on the barrel, plus a handful of small nails to repair a subtle handle crack. Presents quite nicely despite these flaws.
